[MAC] AC2 "Internet Connection Problem"

I just bought AC2 on Steam. Whenever I try to launch the game from Steam, the Ubisoft Game Launcher says "Internet Connection Problem. Unable to access the internet. Please verify your connection.You can change network settings in the settings view." I have not been able to register the game yet. I'm on a 13'' Macbook Pro running 10.7.5

The hosts file solution has not worked for me (there are no ubi related entries in there) and I have not seen any solutions that have worked thus far. Any ideas?
