Had the same issue after downloading from Steam, stating that i could not connect. Well played with different options all day and finally deleted UPLAYloader.exe and redownloading, i did it a few times, moving this and that and FINALLY! was able to connect and had to jump over to Steam to get Shades Key and had to unlock it but now it shows all content available to play. The big question is, If i could figure this out, and UBISOFT can't - doesn't say much about the company, does it?
